Emerging artists from across the North East are taking to the stage alongside some of music’s biggest names.

spot-950378_960_720Ten aspiring acts from South Tyneside and other areas of Tyne and Wear will be appearing at Bents Park, South Shields during July, as part of the South Tyneside Festival’s Sunday Concert series 2016.

The performers, invited by event organisers, South Tyneside Council, will open for a host of well-known bands and singers, including The Proclaimers, Tony Hadley, UB40 and a trio of X Factor favourites.

First up will be Newcastle duo 95OneDream, made up of best friends Vanessa Rogers and Holly Murray, singer Channy Thompson, who has already proven a hit on the festival circuit across the UK and regional samba group, Drum Young.

These three acts, who are all currently unsigned, will support X Factor winners Alexandra Burke and Ben Haenow, as well as fan favourites Reggie ‘n’ Bollie, who launch the open air series on Sunday July 10.

The following week it’s the turn of Newcastle soul singer and songwriter, Beth Macari, who previously fronted the house band on Sky One show, Bring The Noise. She will appear alongside Lindisfarne and Scottish duo, The Proclaimers, in Bents Park on Sunday July 17.

The third Sunday concert, on July 24, will be headlined by Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley, with support from North East pop/rock band 4 Worried Men, as well as South Shields star Lauren Amour and fellow ‘sand-dancer’ Stevie Tennet, who appeared on the X Factor in 2014.

British reggae pioneers, UB40, will close the South Tyneside Festival’s Sunday Concert series on July 31, where they will be joined by South Tyneside’s Young Performer of the Year 2015, Eve Simpson, Newcastle-based singer, songwriter and pianist, Lily Brooke and pop/rock cover band, The Shakes.

The Sunday Concert Series, organised annually by South Tyneside Council, is sponsored by Zeera Indian restaurant and takeaway, Port of Tyne, Colmans fish and chips and NCS (National Citizen Service).

Councillor Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, said: “The South Tyneside Festival has a proud tradition of showcasing top North East talent and we are delighted to be hosting so many new performers for 2016.

“Not only will they offer outstanding support for our high profile, headline acts, but I am sure they will also wow the crowds in their own right.”

Gates for each of South Tyneside Festival’s Sunday Concerts will open at around 1pm on the date specified, with an enhanced food and drink offering, including craft ales, Pimms and prosecco, available throughout the day.

Entry is free and all festival-goers are permitted to bring a picnic if they prefer.
